Managing People in Organisations

This course will give you valuable insights into organizational life and help you better understand the organizations you work in and the behavior of the people with whom you interact.

About this Course

 In order to be successful, managers must not only understand why people behave the way they do in organizations both as individuals and in groups, but they must also be able to apply their understanding in the practical, complex dynamics of the workplace.

Managing People in Organizations course is designed to help you understand the effect your behavior at work, and the behavior of those around you, has on work performance. The course has been designed to develop the analytical skills which will assist students to obtain valuable insights into organizational life. By doing this, students shall be able to better understand the organizations they work in and the behavior of the people with whom you interact.

The course shall cover among others common organizational features such as job roles, working groups, power structures and job design. Each session in this course covers a topic that contributes to a students’ understanding of how people and organizations function so that they can become better managers of themselves, other people, and the organizations they work for.

Course Outline 

Unit 1: Organisational Overviews 

A field of study that investigates the impact that individuals, groups, and structure have on behavior within organizations, for the purpose of applying such knowledge toward improving an organization’s effectiveness.
  1. After studying this chapter you should be able to: – Importance of studying OB –
  2. Define organizational behavior (OB). 
  3. Show the value to OB of systematic study. –
  4. Identify the major behavioral science disciplines that contribute to OB. –
  5. Demonstrate why there are few absolutes in OB. –
  6. Identify the challenges and opportunities managers have in applying OB concepts. –
  7. Compare the three levels of analysis in this book’s OB model.

Unit 2: Management Theory 

What is Management?
— Traditional View of Management
— Common Terms, Levels and Roles in Management
— Is Leading Different Than Managing?

Unit 3: People in Organisations

In this part of the course, we are going to assume (as PG students) that you will read the textbook on human resources management. Our task will be to highlight some issues that need further discussion. Human resource functions are essentially the same across all types of organizations, although the culture and practices of an organization, together with the kind of organization and the personalities involved make for some marked differences.
